Welcome - Lynsey Lowe Counselling & Psychotherapy Nottingham

Hello, welcome and thank you for visiting my website...

We all face times when life feels too much... and at the moment that's a pretty universal feeling. I am able to offer face to face appointments but also continuing some sessions via Zoom or telephone.

The pandemic is a challenge for us all and will impact on our mental health and wellbeing. For those who suffer with anxiety it is particularly difficult but I think we are all noticing the emotional effect - whether that's in more irritability, need for coping strategies such as over-eating, drinking or watching TV!

Therapy can be a good place to consider and reflect on our needs and emotional reaction. I have put some tips for managing how we're feeling on the downloads page.

Why choose therapy?

People consider therapy for all sorts of reasons. You might be in crisis and feel you've got to "do something". You may have been aware for a long time that there's something you need to look at. Perhaps you're depressed, lacking energy or just feeling that life just feels as if there’s something missing, that there's not much pleasure or joy? You may be suffering from too much stress or anxiety, you may feel it's hopeless... seeking help isn't a sign of weakness. In reality it takes courage to seek out therapy and to do the work which can help you find a way forward.

Adjustments as lockdown restrictions change

I am able to offer face to face appointments at my office/therapy room on Gregory Boulevard. There will, no doubt, be a need to practice social distancing for some time to come but my office and the building are suitable for us to be able to do that. Foxhall Lodge have carried out a full risk assessment and put appropriate provisions in place including installing screens in reception, extra cleaning, hand sanitiser, etc.

Christmas and the New Year often bring challenges, maybe made you face up to some things which previously you may have been able to ignore, or possibly you're a frontline worker and some of what you've experienced has been distressing and possibly even traumatising. Whatever the reason many more people may be looking for counselling and support as they work through things. My counselling space/office is close to the centre of Nottingham and easily accessible by car or public transport.

Some of my experience as a therapist

I work with individuals or couples to explore ways to improve their lives and relationships. I trained in person-centred and humanistic therapy as well as solution focused therapy. I have since studied trauma and abuse as well as training in working with couples.

I have worked in a local voluntary sector organisation supporting survivors of abuse and sexual violence. I have worked within the NHS in Nottingham counselling individuals suffering from anxiety and depression. I am an accredited member of BACP and a trained counselling & psychotherapy clinical supervisor. I previously worked in careers work and have extensive experience in designing and delivering training, CPD and personal development workshops in both careers and psychotherapy.

I am fascinated by how trauma impacts the brain and affects our psychological well-being but also by the changes that therapy and mindfulness can bring about.

I have worked with individuals or groups experiencing difficulties for over 13 years. I'm experienced in working with anxiety, depression, and common mental health difficulties. People seek help from a therapist for all sorts of reasons – relationship breakdown, poor relationships with others (work, family, friends), stress and work related problems, bereavement, divorce or just a general sense that life isn’t working very well! Please do contact me, by phone or email, or see below, to find out if I can help with your particular problem or difficulty.

I offer therapy in a compassionate, caring and client-focused way. I work with people to help them gain understanding and to find more helpful and considered ways to manage their difficulties. There is no magic wand in therapy – it does take hard work but I will be that compassionate ally as you work through things. I can work with all kinds of difficulties that we as human beings can experience: depression, anxiety, relationship or work difficulties, stress, or just that sense that nothing feels right.

It can feel daunting to find a therapist. Firstly you’ve made the decision to try counselling and then you begin the journey of finding the right counsellor for you. Research indicates that a good relationship with your therapist is the most important aspect of therapy. So it’s important you look for someone you think you can work with and feel comfortable with. I trained in the person-centred approach which means my focus is on the relationship between us and utilising that to help you in whatever way is appropriate.

"When a person realises he has been deeply heard, his eyes moisten. I think in some real sense he is weeping for joy. It is as though he is saying, 'Thank God, somebody heard me. Someone knows what it's like to be me""

Getting started & the first session

If you like what you’ve read and would like to take the plunge then you can either contact me by phone or email to arrange an initial appointment.

If you’re not sure whether you want to take that step yet I can offer a free telephone call prior to arranging an appointment if that would suit you, where we can discuss what your difficulties are and what you are hoping for from therapy. I am also happy to take email contacts if that feels better for you. We can discuss what your hopes are and what difficulties you are facing. If you've any questions I'll be happy to answer them.

Once you’ve decided to make an appointment we can arrange a mutually convenient day & time for that first appointment. At this first appointment I’ll ask you to tell me a little about why you’re seeking therapy. I’ll be hoping to find out a bit about what the difficulties are and what you are hoping for from counselling. This will help us both work out whether therapy is going to be helpful for you, or if there is another alternative which might suit you better.

Contact details are either to the right or top of the page depending on whether you're on a phone, laptop or PC.

Counselling/Psychotherapy in Nottingham

I provide counselling in Nottingham, near the city centre, with an emphasis on supporting you to a greater understanding of yourself and your problems and enabling you to find solutions and ways to cope. As a counsellor I have worked with all kinds of difficulties from work-related stress and anxiety to serious childhood trauma & abuse. My counselling & psychotherapy practice is based in Nottingham, close to the city - at Foxhall Lodge on Gregory Boulevard. My colleague Sally French works in Edwinstowe if that location is more convenient for you. click here to see her details.

Short-term or longer psychotherapy

I have experience of counselling individuals for time limited therapy of 6 or 8 sessions, and of working over longer periods of six months or with some individuals for several years. It all depends on you as an individual and what you are looking to achieve, on what you need to work on and how much you want to invest. I will happily discuss this with you and we can work together to see what is going to help you. I will never tell you how many sessions you should have or that you need to continue if you don't wish to. The decision always rests with you.

Couples Counselling Nottingham

Many relationships can face difficulties and for a variety of reasons. For many years I've worked with one half of a couple when a relationship is struggling, and often thought "if only the other person was here to discuss this together". I now offer couple counselling in Nottingham city centre for those who want to explore together ways to rebuild a relationship that's broken down, to explore what's going wrong in their relationship, or simply to work through a difficult period or specific problem. One of the great benefits of therapy is that the therapist is neutral but offers a safe space to talk. It can feel scary or just plain strange to go and see someone to talk about your relationship! I know that and will aim to make it as easy as possible to work through whatever your difficulties are and I know from experience that most people don't regret it.
